A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration cannot stop food stamp recipients from using their benefits to buy sugary drinks, candy, and other sweet snacks.
The decision blocks restrictions that were already in place or planned in several states through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said the government did not have the legal authority to make those changes. She noted that current federal law broadly defines what foods can be purchased through the program.
The restrictions were part of an effort to encourage healthier eating habits among SNAP recipients. Supporters of the policy argued it could help reduce the consumption of sugary products.
However, opponents said the limits would make it harder for some families to access food and manage their daily needs.
The Trump administration has not announced whether it plans to appeal the ruling.
